Our most recent Eclectica III auction took place on 17th July and featured the sale of number of Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco ceramics, sculptures, and jewellery as well an eclectic mixture of antiques, art, glass, and curiosities. With nearly 90% of the lots sold, here are Mark’s favourite auction highlights from the sale.
Throughout the sale, Art Nouveau and Deco sculptures and ceramics made a strong performance typical of the drama of their look. Lot 274, a 1930s ‘Message of Love’ gilded bronze figurine, designed by Pierre Le Faguays, modelled as a elegantly poised figure with a dove resting in her palm was complemented by a gorgeous gilded patina with matching highlights of gold veins in the Portoro marble base. She sold for £4,248. Mark was delighted to kick the sale off with the sale of Lots 1 and 2, both 1920s Goldscheider Art Deco figures designed by Stephan Dakon. One was his famous 'Captured Bird' figurine which sold at £1,652 and the other was a Carnival Girl with her outstretched pantsuit, which realised £2,242 in the auction.

Two watches stood out above the rest in a growing market for modern and antique timepieces. Lot 359, a beautiful Cartier Tank Americaine 18ct gold gentleman’s wristwatch, proved to be highly desirable and saw fierce international bidding online and in person. It sold for a staggering £7,080. From a private collection of pocket watches in the sale, Lot 353, a late Victorian 18ct gold gentleman’s pocket watch performed especially well, fetched £3,068.
Amongst the pictures sold were a number of Fred Yates (British, 1922-2008) paintings from a private collection. Lot 228, ‘The Footbridge in Winter’ was a highlight from the collection. The work’s gorgeous thickly applied impasto paint and rich purple colour palette proved irresistible and sold for £2,006.
