Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795-1875), ‘Cheval Turc No.2, Antérieur Gauche Levé, Terasse Ovale’ (Turkish Horse No.2, left foreleg raised, oval base), mid-late 19th century patinated ‘animalier’ bronze of a horse on a naturalistic mounded base over an oval concave plinth, signed ‘BARYE’, base 25cm long overall, 24.3cm long at base of plinth, horse 30cm high, 31cm longest.

FOOTNOTE: This highly desirable model is considered a masterpiece of French ‘animalier’ bronze sculpture and represents the height of Romanticism, with inspirations drawn from the powerful art of Delacroix and Gericault. It also echoes both Antique and Renaissance equestrian artworks. Modelled by perhaps the most renowned animalier sculptor, it shows his mastery of anatomy and the medium. A number of different models were produced, with right or left foreleg raised, and on rectangular or oval bases. The author of the 1844 Besse & Cie catalogue wrote “…the only feeling that one can experience upon seeing it is a deep admiration both for one of nature’s most noble creatures and the talent of its delineator.”

Condition: No losses, some wear to finish at extremities, a very few light scratches in places. Some very gentle light green tones and small spots to the base of the plinth. A green baize covered plaster panel (shown in last photograph) has been removed from the base to allow the inside of the base to be inspected and photographed.
